Abstract

This study aims to analyze interpersonal communication patterns between stepfathers and stepchildren and their implications for the psychosocial development of stepchildren in the Jabodetabek region. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to gain an in-depth understanding of communication experiences within stepfamilies. The informants consist of four stepfathers—Saparudin, Wawan Setiawan, Likun, and Dwi Nugrahi Fitriansyah, who have stepfamily backgrounds due to divorce or the death of the biological parent, with stepfather roles ranging from 4 to 15 years.Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that interpersonal communication between stepfathers and stepchildren tends to be open, relaxed, and collaborative. Communication is built through openness, empathy, and two-way interaction by involving stepchildren in daily interactions and family decision-making. Communication barriers mainly arise from differences in personality, emotional background, and early adaptation processes. However, consistent openness and empathy strengthen emotional closeness and mutual trust. Keywords: interpersonal communication, stepfather, stepchild, stepfamily.
