Preservasi Tradisi Kemponan Oleh Masyarakat Pontianak
Abstract
This study aims to examine the preservation of the Kemponan tradition by the people of Pontianak in the context of social interaction, intercultural communication, and cultural identity formation. Kemponan is a form of local wisdom among the Malay community of Pontianak, related to the practice of touching or accepting food and drinks offered as a sign of respect and politeness. The main issue addressed in this study is how the meaning, values, norms, and practices of Kemponan are maintained amid social change and modernization. This research employs a qualitative method with a ethnography approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with community leaders and local residents of Pontianak, as well as observation and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Kemponan tradition is still practiced in daily life through social interactions such as receiving guests, family gatherings, social events, and before traveling. This tradition embodies values of politeness, mutual respect, obedience to parents, and serves as a symbol of Malay cultural identity in Pontianak. The preservation of Kemponan is carried out through intergenerational transmission within families and social environments, although its practice has adapted to modern conditions.
