Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of escapism as depicted in Steven Spielberg’s film Ready Player One (2018). The film portrays how modern individuals attempt to escape from a harsh and oppressive reality into a virtual world called the OASIS as a means of seeking freedom and self-identity. The purpose of this research is to analyze the representation of escapism in Ready Player One using John Fiske’s semiotic theory, which consists of three levels of analysis: the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. This study employs a qualitative research method with a constructivist paradigm, and the analysis focuses on scenes, dialogues, expressions, and cinematic elements within the film. The findings indicate that the film presents two forms of escapism: self-suppression escapism, which reflects an attempt to avoid real-life pressures, and self-expansion escapism, which allows individuals to explore and redefine themselves within the virtual realm. At the ideological level, the film critiques capitalist structures and technological dependency that drive people toward mass escapism from reality. In conclusion, Ready Player One serves not only as a work of science fiction entertainment but also as a social reflection on how digital society increasingly relies on virtual worlds as a form of psychological and existential escape from the constraints of real life. Keywords: film, representation, escapism, John Fiske’s semiotics, Ready Player One
