Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication stages in building friendships among Treasure fans (Treasure Makers) in Bandung based on Altman and Taylor’s Social Penetration Theory. The research focuses on how interactions evolve from shared interests into deep personal closeness. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological method, data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants selected via purposive and snowball sampling. The results indicate that friendships develop through four distinct stages: orientation, exploratory affective exchange, affective exchange, and stable exchange. A key finding reveals that a shared interest in Treasure serves only as an initial gateway, while relationship sustainability is primarily determined by the quality of interpersonal communication, trust, and consistent emotional support. Furthermore, contextual factors, such as the shared experience of being a long-distance student commuter ("pejuang kuliah PP") in Bandung, act as significant catalysts for emotional bonding. In conclusion, communication is vital in transforming fandom-based relations into stable, meaningful real-life friendships. Keywords: Interpersonal Communication; Friendship; Social Penetration Theory; Treasure Maker; Bandung
