Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the intercultural communication patterns exhibited by Javanese
and Sundanese students at the Faculty of Communication and Social Sciences, Telkom University, employing the
Communication Accommodation Theory as a theoretical framework. The focal point of this inquiry lies in the
examination of students belonging to two distinct ethnic groups. These students exhibit a propensity to adapt their
communication methodologies, while concurrently upholding their cultural identities and adeptly navigating the
intricacies of cultural divergences in their day-to-day interactions. The theory employed in this study encompasses
the concepts of convergence, divergence, and over-accommodation. The research method employed is qualitative, and
data collection is facilitated through in-depth interviews with ten informants from the Javanese and Sundanese tribes.
The findings indicated that student informants employed convergence strategies, which entailed the use of Indonesian
language, assimilation into the interlocutor's cultural milieu, and the utilization of slang as a conduit for
communication. However, elements of divergence manifest in the form of accents, regional languages, and speech
styles that are still maintained as cultural identity. A similar phenomenon is observed in three students who, despite
maintaining their cultural heritage, exhibit excessive accommodation as a gesture of respect and an effort to cultivate
intimacy. Six barriers to intercultural communication have been identified: assumptions of similarities, language
differences, misinterpretation of nonverbal behavior, prejudice and stereotypes, tendency to judge, and high anxiety.
The mitigation of these barriers is contingent upon an open attitude, effective two-way communication, and a high
degree of cultural awareness.
